Why your staff think you’re underpaying them
Net pay dropped ₦12,000 and nobody explained why. Clear payslips fix most payroll arguments before they reach your desk.
- Net pay changes need a line-by-line explanation on the payslip.
- Bonuses spike PAYE — staff will ask if you do not show it.
- Let staff pull payslips from a portal instead of WhatsApp PDFs.
Tunde messages on Saturday: “Oga, my salary is short again.” You know it is not — he got a bonus in May that pushed PAYE up, and June is back to normal. But your “salary” was a bank alert with no breakdown. To him, the number changed and you look like the problem.
Every line named: gross, statutory deductions, net. No guessing.
What staff actually want to see
They are not asking for a finance lecture. They want to verify basic salary, see pension and tax taken out, and understand one-off items like a bonus or a loan repayment. A payslip is a receipt for their trust.
- Employer name and pay period dates
- Gross pay and each allowance listed
- Pension (employee share), NHF, PAYE — separate lines
- Net pay and payment date
- Year-to-date totals if you run variable pay
When net pay moves month to month
Common reasons staff panic: bonus last month spiked PAYE; mid-month advance recovered; NHF started after basic crossed the threshold; unpaid leave day. If the payslip shows it, the WhatsApp message never comes.
Payslips in the portal — you approve payroll once, they self-serve.
Your side of the bargain
Transparency works both ways. Run payroll on time, remit pension and PAYE as promised, and keep payslips consistent with what left the account. When numbers match, disputes end in two minutes.
